In total 74 different venues entered the scheme back in September with 67 venues across the region being accredited. To receive Best Bar None status, venues are assessed on the policies and procedures they have in place to reduce alcohol related disorder and promote responsible drinking. The bar category proved particularly tough with six venues eventually being chosen to make up the shortlist of 16 finalists in total. The finalists had to present before a panel of judges who then put forward the top five scoring venues in each category.
The judging committee consisted of representatives from Safe Newcastle’s partner organisations including Northumbria Police, Newcastle City Council, the Security Industry Authority, The Primary Health Care Trust as well as event backers Metro Radio.
The awards ceremony was sponsored by MNX Security Limited.
Amongst the VIPs who attended the event were Chief Constable Mike Craik of Northumbria Police and Cllr John Shipley OBE, the leader of Newcastle City Council. Guests at the glitzy event, hosted by local radio personalities Wayne and Anna, were entertained by Eighties soul legend Alexander O’Neal and also participated in a charity auction chaired by former Premiership referee Jeff Winter raising money for Metro Radio’s Just for Kids charity.
