Revolution is celebrating after being named Overall Winner at this year's prestigious Best Bar None Awards.
The winners of Newcastle’s 2010 Best Bar None were announced at a glitzy award ceremony on Sunday at the Civic Centre Banqueting Suite. The annual event gives the nightlife venues of Newcastle a chance to be rewarded and to celebrate the hard work they put in to make Newcastle one of the best cities in Europe to enjoy.
Set up and organised by community safety partnership Safe Newcastle, Best Bar None rewards and recognises the pubs, clubs and bars of Newcastle who work to reduce alcohol related disorder and promote responsible drinking.
The winning bar was up against strong competition, with a record 73 venues being accredited in this year. A shortlist of 26 top scoring venues in the bar, pub, club and local pub categories were visited by a panel of judges in April. The bar category proved particularly tough with nine venues eventually being chosen to make up the shortlist. Each finalist had to present before a panel of judges who then put forward the top five scoring venues in each category.
On top of Best Bar None Overall Winner, Revolution also picked up the Gold Award in the Bar Category. Jon Mortimer, manager of Revolution said: “We’re thrilled that our pub was named Overall Winner as well as Best Bar. We continuously strive to make our bar a great place for our customers, locals and visitors alike. We want every customer to enjoy their time at Revolution, that’s why we wanted to achieve the accreditation and the title of Overall Winner. We’re feeling very proud of ourselves.”
Newcastle club favourite, Digital, picked up the Gold Award in the Best Club category. Chris Brown, manager of the club, said “We got the Silver Award last year and we had high hopes in doing better 2010. The hard work that we put into Digital has been recognised and it’s great to have this award to show that. Anybody who visits our club are assured that we put all our efforts into making their night a great one.”
Sarah Stewart, Interim Chief Executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative also attended the awards nights. She said “Newcastle was recently voted one of the best nightlife destinations in Europe. Being here tonight, it’s easy to see why. It is so impressive to see all these players in Newcastle’s nightlife industry all striving to be the best and safest licensed premise they can be, raising their standards so they can be Best Bar None.
The fact that so many premises have achieved this accreditation is a testament to the nightlife industry in Newcastle, showing that they are committed to keeping this city a top nightlife destination.”
Guests at the event, hosted by Metro Radio’s Brian Moore and Kenny D, were entertained by north east comedy legend Brendan Healy. Attendees raised over £4000 pounds for Metro Radio’s Cash for Kids.
